What is the PONDERAL Index?

PONDERAL Index is a method of obesity measurement. This index is also known as PI and was created by F. Rohrerem in 1921. At that time it was referred to as corpulence index . The term 'pongral' refers to the estimated value or weight. Both indices use the height and weight ratio. Originally, the value of Pi was arrived by distributing the mass of a person in kilograms at their height in meters. The height value is covered before weight distribution. There are also versions of the Imperial Units version of the PONDERAL Index and uses the height of the person in the thumbs divided by the root of the cube of its mass in the pounds. Normal BMI measurement for adults, which is 5 feet high (180 cm), is 12.49 to 13.92al index on PONDER, if the value is calculated using pounds and inches. The larger the value, the more obese individuals.

This index is often used to evaluate newborns and very low or high values are generally shownIf problems with intrauterine growth growth. A study conducted in 1990 showed a correlation between the pumderal index value of the newborn and the value of the later born sibling. Knowledge of the first child in the family can therefore help in determining the prevailing conditions of the uterus, which may be useful if the second child is conceived.

There are also other variants of this index. One uses the weight value in grams divided by a height in centimeters 3 , and then multiplied by 100. This creates a normal value of 2.4 for a 12 -month child. Another variation uses the cube root of the person's weight in kilograms, divided by their height in centimeters and then multiplied by 1,000- resulting in an average of 21.75 to 24.00 for an adult, which is 5 feet high 11 inches (180 cm).

The advantage of a pumderal system is that the resulting values are consistent at different heights. Also, when the values are listed in kilograms per meter

3 , the index index has the same unit as the density rate. Both the pumderal index and the BMI require only one simple calculation, but BMI is used much more often in popular culture. The PONDERAL Index is now most commonly used for pediatric purposes.
