What Are Levator Muscles?
The scapular levator muscles are located on both sides of the neck. The upper part of the muscle is on the deep side of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, and the lower part is on the deep side of the trapezius muscle. Slightly backwards, and stops at the upper corners of the scapula and the upper part of the scapula spine. It has the function of lifting the scapula and turning it under the scapula. It is a heavy muscle in the cervical spine. The scapular levator muscle should be strengthened as appropriate. Excessive tension in this muscle will reduce the flexibility and keep the shoulder straps raised (ie shrugging). Prolonged shrugging will cause neck discomfort and poor blood supply to the head.
