What is Brodmann Area 25?

Brodmann Area 25 (Ba 25) is part of the brain cortex. The area is also called subgenial cingulate . BA 25 is a place of recent experimental studies with deep brain stimulation (DBS) in the treatment of depression. The name of this area comes from Korbinian Brodmann, a German neurologist who created the idea of mapping and numbering parts of the brain. Cytoarchitecture of the brain is determined by tissue staining and reveals nerve cells. Different areas Brodmann generally corresponds to certain psychological functions. It is assumed that the Cytoarchitectural brain area, Brodmann Area 25, is related to behavior and emotions.

Success with DBS in BA 25 was first demonstrated in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Some studies in deep brain stimulation (DBS), which include planting electrodes in the Brodmann region, proposed promising treatment for depression. Patients with a large depressive disorder who had depressed resistant to treatment showed improvement after DBS in BA 25. In one study used by DBS in the Brodmann 25, eight out of 12 patients with depression resistant to treatment responded positively. In another similar study, four out of six patients with depression resistant to the treatment of remission of their depression experienced.

It should be noted that several patients have experienced side effects in some DBS treatments. In one study, 9% of depressive disorders resistant to the treatment of neuropyschiatric side effects, which included relapse in depression and personality changes. Other risks associated with DBS include damage to electrode slip or brain bleeding.

Brodmann area 25 stimulated in deep stimulation of the brain is white matter. White matter is a whitish -red nervous tissue found in the brain and spinal cord. Brodmann Area 25 is a relatively thin strip of brain. Korbinian Brodmann first included BA25 in Brodmann Area 24 (Ba 24) in 1905, but then mapped two separate sections, Ba 25 and Ba 24, in 1909.
