What Is the Cephalic Vein?
It is one of the superficial veins of the forearm and upper arm. It starts from the radial side of the dorsal venous network of the hand, bypasses the radial edge of the forearm to the side of the palm of the forearm, and accommodates the branches of the palm and dorsal side along the way.

Overview of the cephalic vein
- At the elbow fossa, the cephalic vein goes upwards between the radial and biceps brachii, through the surface of the lateral cutaneous nerve of the forearm, and continues up the lateral groove of the biceps brachii to the deltoid and pectoralis major grooves. Accompanied by the deltoid branch of the thoracic acromioclavicular artery, it is injected into the axillary vein or subclavian vein through the coracoclavicular fascia. Clinically, an embedded pacemaker is usually placed in the deltoid muscle and the pectoralis major muscle groove through the cephalic vein. Just below the cubital fossa, a median cubital vein is branched from the cephalic vein. The outer diameter of the cephalic vein before dividing the median elbow of the elbow: 0.29 (0.15 to 0.5) cm in children; 0.43 (0.2 to 0.9) cm in adults. The cephalic vein may have 1 to 2 pairs of venous valves before the median cubital vein is issued. The cephalic vein is connected with the deep veins in the cubital fossa.
Anatomy of the head vein
- One of the superficial veins of the upper limb. The cephalic vein is first on the radial side of the back of the hand, above the radial wrist joint, and turned to the flexion of the forearm. Then, it goes up along the radial edge of the forearm and receives many superficial veins on both sides of the forearm flexion and extension on the way. Anastomosis with the guiyang vein; then, go up the lateral side of the biceps brachii, pass through the inherent fascia between the deltoid muscle and the pectoralis major muscle, and inject it into the subclavian vein or axillary vein. The cephalic vein is one of the commonly used veins in clinical venipuncture (blood transfusion, infusion, blood test).
