What are chronometer watches?

Chronometer watches are a special type of watch that have been tested and meets the standards for the accuracy of the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chrononomètres (COSC), the official test institute of the Swiss chronometer. Chronometer watches must not lose more than four or get more than six, seconds a day. About one million watches are certified every year as chronometers, which accounts for 3% of the total production of Swiss watches. Such watches are usually made of high quality parts and materials. Seven criteria must be met for certification. It belongs to:

  • Consistency of average rate for the first 10 test days
  • Average change in times
  • The biggest difference between any reading of two days in one position
  • difference between rates in horizontal and vertical positions
  • The biggest difference between the average daily rate and any individual rate during the initial 10 days of position testing
  • temperature motion error measured in seconds to grade
  • restorerates

Refreshment is calculated by subtracting the average average daily speed from the first two days of testing, from the average daily speed of the last day of testing. Each testing is compared with atomic clocks for absolute accuracy. After all these requirements have been met, the watch is certified.

6 These watches also usually include one or more feature features as complications that can range from the eternal calendar to the display showing the phases of the moon. Complications, as inferred from the name, are built into the watch mechanism and contribute to its complexity.

Although it is not technically complications according to most watchmakers, the most famous of these mechanical accessories is tourbillon . French for Whirlwind was originally designed to face the effects of gravity when the watch movement turned. While today isTheir use to a large extent included in the decorative state, the turbillons are still visible in the most expensive and complex types of chronometers - which are often left to display their internal functioning. While the development of quartz movement in the 60s and 1970s caused chroneromerromerromer watches to be outdated from a technical point of view, they continue to enjoy healthy sales for their aesthetic properties and accurate engineering.
