What is Local Number Portability?
Local number portability (LNP) refers to the fact that phone users in the United States can still use their original local phone numbers after choosing a local phone service provider. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 stipulated that local exchanges and telecommunications bureaus must provide this technical support in the markets of 100 major cities by the end of 1998. This method is designed to eliminate the hassle of applying for a new number when you have to choose another local telephone service provider, and competition between providers will continue to increase. LNP is the cost necessary for them to compete in the long-distance communications market.
