What Are the Different Types of English Qualifications?
The TEM-8 (Test for English Majors-Band 8) is called the National College English Majors Exam. Since 1991, it has been implemented by the Chinese Ministry of Education to inspect comprehensive university English majors across the country. The English Majors' Level 8 exam is sponsored by the College Foreign Languages Professional Teaching Steering Committee (not sponsored by the Ministry of Education). It is held once a year in March. Exams are held in the morning. Questions include listening, reading, correction, translation and writing. The exam covers English listening, reading, writing, and translation. In 2005, it added humanities knowledge. Written examination form assessment. The oral test is assessed separately. It is called "English Majors 'Level 8 Spoken and Interpretation Examination". After passing the exam, the "English Majors' Level 8 Spoken and Interpreter Certificate" is issued. There are eight oral exams.
English major examinations
- The uniqueness and scarcity of the professional level four and eight certificates are mainly reflected in the following aspects:
- 1. In general universities, only students majoring in English are eligible to take the exam, and students in other majors are not eligible to apply for the test (level 6 is not good);
- 2. In foreign language universities (Shangwai, Beiwai, Beierwai, Xiwai, Guangwai, Tianwai, Dawai, Chuanwai, etc.), in addition to English language majors, other relevant majors can apply for the exam (level 6 must reach 600 Points or more), such as international trade, tourism management, etc .;
- 3. Generally, there is only one opportunity to apply for the fourth year of the sophomore and the eighth year of the senior.
- Listening Comprehension
- In view of the characteristics of the listening part of the TEM-8 test, we can discuss it from two aspects: partial and overall understanding. Looking at the TEM-8 listening test questions, we can find that all test question types are based on what is included in what, who, where, when, why and how, that is, events, people, places, times, reasons and methods. TEM-8 exam listening materials consist of narrative essays and dialogues (or interviews, interviews) of varying lengths, specific to a phenomenon or event. Candidates must grasp the main points of the event and the clues of the development of the event in a large scenario before they can answer the question. Most English majors have good basic skills in listening. What they need to improve is the breadth and depth of listening. Therefore, candidates must consciously listen and practice more in their daily learning life. At the same time, we recommend that students pay attention to the following issues when practicing listening:
- Students participating in the unified test must be students of the English major who passed the national college entrance examination. The specific qualifications for registration are as follows:
- 1. In the institutions of higher learning registered or approved by the Ministry of Education: fourth-year undergraduates of English majors who entered in 2005. (Candidate type number is "40")

- I. Listening Comprehension (PartI: Listening Comprehension)
- Testing requirements:
- (a) Can understand various English conversations and speeches in communicative situations.
- (b) Can understand the special reports on politics, economy, culture, education, science and technology in the programs of foreign media such as VOA or BBC, CNN. (c) Can understand general lectures and post-lecture questions on politics, economy, history, culture and education, language and literature, and popular science.
- (d) Time is 25 minutes.
- Question type: The listening comprehension section uses blank questions and multiple-choice questions, including three items: SectionA, SectionB, and SectionC, a total of 20 questions.
- SectionA: Mini-lecture consists of a 900-word lecture and a fill-in-the-character, asking to take notes while listening, then complete the fill-in-the-character. The answer time is 10 minutes. There are 10 questions in this section.
- Section B: Conversation & Interview consists of about 800 words of conversation. After that, there are 5 multiple choice questions.
- Section C: NewsBroadcast After several news reports, there will be 5 multiple choice questions.
- Note: Section B & C has a 10-second gap after each question. Choose the best answer. The recording speed is about 150 words per minute. Read it again! !! !!
- . Reading Comprehension (PartII: ReadingComprehension)
- Testing requirements:
- (a) Be able to read editorials, politics, and book reviews in general British and American newspapers and magazines. Not only can understand the main idea and the main idea, but also distinguish the facts and details.
- (b) Be able to read general historical biographies and literary works, understand both its literal meaning and its implicit meaning.
- (c) Analyze the ideas, perspectives, language skills, and rhetoric of articles on the above topics.
- (D) Be able to adjust your reading speed during reading.
- (E) Examination time: 30 minutes. Question type: Use multiple choice questions, choose the best answer, and consist of several materials. Contains 3,000 words. There are several small questions behind each piece of material. A total of 20 questions. Speed: about 150 words / minute.

- A) Extensive subject matter, social, cultural, technological, economic, daily knowledge, biographies

- III. Human Knowledge (Part III: General Knowledge)
- Testing requirements:
- A) Basic understanding of the geography, history, current situation, and cultural traditions of major English-speaking countries

- C) Basic knowledge of English language
- D) The 10-minute part of the test takes multiple choices and selects the best answer. A total of 10 questions.

- IV. Corrections (Part IV: Proofreading and ErrorCorrection)
- Testing requirements:
- Students are required to be able to use language knowledge such as grammar, rhetoric, and structure to identify language problems in short passages and propose ways to correct them.
- Question type:
- This question consists of a short essay of about 250 words, with 10 lines marked with the question number. Each of these 10 lines contains a typo. To correct the speech error. The total test time is 15 minutes. There are 10 questions in total.
- V. Translation (Part V: Translation)
- Test requirements: The Chinese-English translation project requires candidates to use Chinese-English translation theories and techniques to translate expositions and national conditions in Chinese newspapers and magazines, as well as excerpts from general literary works. The speed is about 250-300 Chinese characters per hour. The translation must be faithful to the original intent and the language fluent.
- The English-to-Chinese project requires candidates to use English-to-Chinese theories and techniques to translate political, economic, historical, cultural and other expositions in English and American newspapers and magazines, as well as extracts from original literary works. The speed is about 250-300 words per hour. Translation requires faithful intent and fluency.
- Question type: This question is divided into two sections: SectionA and SectionB. The total test time is 60 minutes. SectionA: Sections around 150 words are underlined. Require that this paragraph be translated into English, depending on the context. SectionB: B 150-word paragraphs are underlined. This paragraph is required to be translated into Chinese according to the context.
- VI. Writing (Part VI: Writing) Test Requirements: Students should be able to write an explanation or argument about 400 words based on the topics and requirements given. The composition must be fluent in language, appropriate in words, reasonable in structure, appropriate in style, and persuasive.
- Each part of the test paper uses the method of deduction of rights and is converted into a percentage system. A passing score of 60 points.
- 1. Listening 25 minutes
- A) 10 questions with 10 points
- B, C) 5 objective questions each with a total of 10 points.
- 2. Reading 30 minutes objective questions 20 questions, 20 points

- The registration time is November or December of each year, and the specific time is subject to the notice of each university's teaching affairs office. Group registration is based on the student ID of the universityno other students are accepted.
