Apnea refers to spontaneous apnea, usually temporary or self-limiting, such as Chen-Shi breathing, Biot breathing. Most cases are fatal and require urgent treatment.

Apnea refers to spontaneous apnea, usually temporary or self-limiting, such as Chen-Shi breathing, Biot breathing. Most cases are fatal and require urgent treatment.
Apnea is caused by impaired six pathophysiological mechanisms, each of which has multiple causes. The most common causes include trauma, cardiac arrest, neurological disorders, inhalation of foreign bodies, bronchospasm, and overdose.

Causes of Apnea

Airway obstruction
Brain stem dysfunction
Neuromuscular disorders

Parenchymal lesions

Pleural pressure gradient disappears
Reduced pulmonary capillary perfusion
