- Apnea is caused by impaired six pathophysiological mechanisms, each of which has multiple causes. The most common causes include trauma, cardiac arrest, neurological disorders, inhalation of foreign bodies, bronchospasm, and overdose.

- Brain stem dysfunction
- Neuromuscular disorders

- Pleural pressure gradient disappears
- Reduced pulmonary capillary perfusion
