What is cortical damage?

Cortical damage is the damage to the vision caused by brain injuries, while the eyes and optical nerves remain a healthy and normal appearance. Cortical damage can also be known as cortical visual impairment or cortical blindness, caused by a number of different things and available treatment options are variable. The diagnosis of this condition can be complicated because people usually see ophthalmologists for eye problems and a neurologist is better equipped to evaluate patients with this condition.

Although this condition is sometimes called cortical blindness, patients with cortical disorders are not really blind. Symptoms of cortical damage may include lack of depth perception, narrowing of vision, changes in the quality of vision during the day, light sensitivity, low contrast problems and other visual problems. During eye examination, the patient's eyes and optical nerves seem functionally normal. Historically, some of the patien pre -assumed that the TS with this condition pretends their deterioration because with the eyes could not be nalEzeno nothing physically bad. A common cause of cortical damage is ischemia where blood flow to the brain is limited during strokes, near drowning and asphyxiation. Traumatic brain injuries can also cause this condition, as well as tumors and degenerative diseases involving the brain. A medical imaging study of the brain will show some areas of damage and the patient may have other damage.

The treatment of cortical damage depends on the cause of the brain damage leading to the problem. If the brain cells are dead, they cannot be resurrected, but the relief of the pressure caused by the tumors and swelling in the brain could restore the patient's vision. Drugs can control degenerative diseases and patients can also wear glasses, eyes and other equipment to solve their vision problems. Polarized lenses can be useful in patients with extreme light sensitivity.

Patient with cortical damage can also benefit from aidto low vision. This includes things such as enlargement glasses for text, large print books and high -contrast labels for objects around the house. Depending on the level of damage, activities such as driving may be limited, but the patient can generally enjoy a high level of activity, including involvement in activities specially designed for people with blindness or other visual disorders. Visually disabled people can be found on ski slopes, in the workplace and in many other settings with the help of adaptive technology and personal helpers.
