What are different types of social network applications?

However, some specific types of applications include social networking websites, programs that allow people to chat through immediate messages and Internet forums to encourage the exchange of ideas and community. There are also a number of social networking applications that can run with other types of social networks such as games, public opinion surveys, quizzes and horoscopic programs. They can consist of everything from websites that support social interaction, such as forums, social networking sites and blogs, to programs that allow electronic communication between individuals such as instant messengers, chat programs and online games. Social networking applications allow for various places for communication, exchange of ideas, cooperation to achieve tasks and goals, and generally create virtual communities.

Some of these social networking applications are created so that people can work together on the project. Some social networking applications can also consist of virtual worlds inhabited by digital avatars that represent people in the real world. In many ways, these latter types of programs are similar to chat rooms, but include the digital world for people to be communicated.
