What is a double lumen catheter?

Double lumen catheter is a long, flexible medical device that consists of one hollow tube in another hollow tube. The word "lumen" means an open surface inside the building, as in the intestinal lumen. It differs from a single lumen catheter in that it allows two different actions close to each other and with less tissue trauma. These actions could be withdrawal of fluid or insertion of fluid, air or small medical devices. These catheters can be used to drain blood, urine or undesirable liquids, such as lungs or abscesses.

The double lumen catheter can be made of one of many flexible materials such as silicone, latex, teflon® or polyurethane. The catheter may have a needle associated with it, which can be removed after the catheter is in place, and at the end of the lumens that remain outside the body, access points - called hubs or injection ports - at the end of the lumens. Often both lumens in the catheter of the double lumen opened in different places. Sometimes it opensOn the opposite sides of the body of the tube and at other times one opens at the tip of the tube and the other opens a short distance from the tip. The hemodialysis catheter can meet both conditions simultaneously.

catheters are double lumen catheters used in cases where the bladder cannot be emptied by normal means due to the health problems the patient has. One lumen allows the physiological solution to fill a small balloon at the tip of the lumen, inside the bladder, hold the catheter in place. The second lumen carries urine from the bladder. Using the urinary catheter brings a high risk of catheter infection, so that catheters with antibiotic substances either cover the surface or infused in flexible material, often used in the urinary tract.

In angioplasty, a double lumen catheter can be used so that the guide wire and fiber-optical cable can be introduced simultaneously to allow tight observation of angioplasticAbout the catheter. The catheter of angioplasty itself can also have two lumens. One of these lumens can inject air into the balloon near the tip and the other can inject dyes, medicines or blood.

In the case of tracheotomy, a double lumen catheter can be used to ventilate the patient and the extraction of any accumulation of liquid at the same time and the same hole. Medium catheters Venus with double lumens allow you to monitor blood pressure in the central circulation system and allow the introduction of drugs and nutrition very close to the heart. In a patient who regularly receives dialysis treatment and has excessive scarring on his veins, iserovenous fistula is - a connection between artery and vein - often surgically to enlarge the vein and facilitate needle insertion. During the newly created fistula, double lumen catheters is used so that the blood can be removed, cleaned and then returned to the body.
