What is Dong Quai?
Dong Quai, also known as Angelica sinensis or Danggui , is one of the most respected herbs in traditional Chinese medicine. Dong Quai is also very used in Korea and Japan and is considered "female female ginseng" and is widely used to treat various gynecological complaints, from flashes to hot flashes to lack of sleep due to hormonal changes. While both men and women can gain benefits from using Dong Quai, the herb has long been the reputation of the menstrual cycle regulation. Natural doctors are prescribed to treat menopausal symptoms and hormonal changes and to induce uterine muscle relaxation. Dong Quai is often combined with black Cohosh to treat PM and is sometimes prescribed by women suffering from endometriosis. Due to its intensive effect on the reproductive system, Dong Quai is not recommended during pregnancy.
As a general healing assistance, Dong Quai has long been offered to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, lower hishgh blood pressureand promotes blood circulation. New studies suggest that this may be true, especially if Dong Quai is combined with ginseng. Dong Quai is also a high content of vitamins A, E and B12 and rich in flavonoids (antioxidants), cumarins (anticoagulants) and ferile, useful in preventing thrombosis and cerebrovascular diseases. Dong Quai is sometimes recommended to strengthen the treatment of liver and kidneys, because some of the herbs appear to have blood cleaning capabilities.
The only useful part of Dong Quai is a root that is dried and sold in the form of tea, capsules, herbal mixtures, powders, tinctures and tablets. Some hospitals in China and Japan use Dong Quai injection, but these preparations are not available in Western countries. Dong Quai is available at the bulkhead in most pharmacies and is sold in centers of healthy nutrition and vitamin stores.Dong quai is not recommended for people using hormonal medicines, inmany oral contraceptives and estrogen because the herb may disrupt drugs; Patients who take blood angles should consult with their doctors before using Dong Quai.
