What is Metoprolol?

Metoprolol is a member of a drug class known as beta blockers and doctors are often prescribed to treat various conditions such as high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Like all beta beta blockers, Metoprolol has the ability to block the effects of certain natural chemicals that cause stress reactions in the body. By preventing the body from reacting to stress in a normal way, for example with an increased pulse, when frightened, metoprolol can help protect individuals for which sudden increase in blood pressure or excessive heart rate may be dangerous. It is sold in the United States under Toprol-XL® and Lopressor® brands. It is generally sold simply as metoprolol. As a result, when an individual using a drug is scared or excited and adrenaline is released into the body in the fight or flight of response, the heart of the person experiences a small or no response to adrenaline. This prevents the heart of an individual at the moment attempting to beat faster and heavier, which may haveThe consequence of heart damage or even death in those who have endangered cardiac systems.

The ability to block adrenaline in the heart caused metoprolol to be useful as treatment outside the designation after some conditions directly related to the heart, such as helping people who experience certain types of anxiety disorders. By preventing increased heart rate and blood pressure in response to adrenaline release during anxiety attack, the physical stress that experiences the individual will significantly reduce, allowing him to continue in the relatively normal way. For the same reasons, the drug is also useful for helping individuals who are not susceptible to anxiety attacks, but who must be able to function normally in extresting situations, such as soldiers involved in fighting.

Other off-webel use for metoprolol is usually related to the vascular system. For example, it can reduce the effects of stress on Kriver pressure, which can help prevent migraine headaches. The drug is also considered to be useful in the treatment of episodes of vasovagal syncope, which is fainting caused by a sudden change in blood flow or blood pressure into the brain.

There are a number of side effects related to metoprolol. The most common and least serious are drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue and slower than normal heart rate. More serious reactions to the drug include too slow heart rate, severe dizziness, fainting, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath and unusual mood changes. Individuals who experience serious reactions should immediately consult their doctors, as well as those who have less serious but permanent side effects.
