What is the Lebanese cedar?
The cedar is an evergreen tree originating in the Middle East, especially in Lebanon, Syria and Turkey. In these countries it grows mainly in areas of high altitude. The tree was historically used in Egyptian tombs. Wood was also used in the construction of the King Solomon Church, listed in the Old Testament Bible. Its suitcase can have a diameter of up to 8 feet (2.44 m). Its canopy can spread anywhere from 30 to 40 feet (9.15 to 12.2 m). The roots are usually around the foot (0.3 m) deep in the soil. The branches of this tree alternate between long and short. Its needles run on the sides of longer branches, but are found in clusters on shorter ones. Each needle can be anywhere from 1/4 to 1 inch (0.64 to 2.54 cm). They usually have a light or medium brown color and can be from three to five inches (7.62 to 12.7 cm). They can also be up to 2 and 1/2 inches (6.35 cm) wide. Male cones are usually in the shape of S, while female cones are usually round.
The Lebanese cedar tree has had a number of uses throughout the history. For example, the wood of this tree is used in the production of military ships, houses and temples. It is assumed that the ancient Egyptians took the resin from it and used it in the mummification, the system of preserving and wrapping the deceased. During biblical time, Lebanese cedar wood was used to treat leprosy, infectious skin diseases and also to build palaces. This species is mentioned more than 70 times in the Bible, partly due to the importance of the Middle East tree during the Old Testament era.
The versatility of this kind could lead to massive deforestation for several centuries. It is estimated that only a small percentage of ancient Lebanese cedar forests remain. There are a number of efforts to maintain the remaining trees and plant new ones. These measures can ensure that the beauty of these natural miracles can be used for many more years.
