What is the Pacific cod?

Pacific cod is a type of sea fish found in the Pacific Ocean from Japan to northern California. This cod is extremely important in the commercial fishing industry, specifically in Alaska. The scientific name of the Pacific cod is gadus macrocephalus .

also called Alaska COD, gray cod and real COD, Pacific Cod has a long body with three dorsal and two anal fins and a square caudar fin or tail. These fish have a brown or gray back and light belly. Brown or pale spots flow their skin and their fins are often lined with white. Although the recorded longest Pacific cod was 37.4 inches (95 cm), on average 24 inches (61 cm). In northern waters, these fish grow more slowly, reach larger size and live longer than their southern counterparts.

usually occurs at depths of 164-984 feet (50–300 m), the Pacific Cod is a coastal fish living on slopes and dazzles in winter and comes to a shallow water in the summer. Were found in water up to 2,812 feet (857 m)and had 33 feet (10 m). As a ground fish, this cod remains near the floor of its habitat. It farts on worms, crustaceans and young fish and is the prey of sharks, seals and halibuts.

Pacific cod is Oviparous, which means that it is reproduced by laying eggs. At any time from January to April, the female cod will lay 225,000-5 million eggs within minutes. The eggs are laid on 131–394 feet (40–120 m) deep water. Once the eggs are laid, the man then fertilizes them.

approximately 28 days later the larvae hatch out of the eggs. The larvae are only 0.1-0.15 inches (3-4 mm) long and still have a yolk bag attached to them. The yolk bag absorbs about ten days after hatching. Juvenile fish live in Kelp beds until they reach about 3 inches (8 cm) long.

Pacific COD is extremes important in the commercial fishing industry, especially in Alaska. At 13.2 percent of the total catch on the GROndfish Alaska in 2008 was one of the most abundant fish caught by Alaskan commercial fisherman, the second only to Pollock, which accounts for more than half of the tasks on underground fish in Alaska. This cod is sold fresh and frozen, as in the form of fish.

is not yet exaggerated, the Pacific COD is controlled by the fishing management council in the North Pacific. This advice helps to ensure that this cod remains abundant in the wild. Due to its healthy population and its tendency to be caught by lines or caught pots, the Pacific cod is often considered to be a replacement for the Atlantic cod for the ocean.
