What is an art installation?
Art Installation is a form of modern art in which art is organized in a specific space of the artist or as specified by the artist. Art installations are usually specific to the place, allowing them to use and interact with the architecture or landscape. The artists choose and arrange materials in the space for the transformation of the perception of the viewer's space. Art works that are installed outside can also be referred to as environmental works of art.
Art installation can be temporary or permanent. It can appear in public or private places and is not limited by material. Installation will often include a number of media such as sculpture, sound, video, light and performance. He tries to immerse the viewer in the environment and involve it in various sensory experiences rather than a static experience in viewing one object or work of art at the same time. The installation of art is strongly relying on the viewer to act as a witness or participant.
Although the idea of an art installation was muchlonger, the movement on the art installation can be traced until the beginning of the 20th century, when surrealists, such as Marcel Duchamp, began to organize spaces in which sculpture should be depicted. In the 1960s, artist Allan Kaprow began to use aspects of art installation as an impulse for an early form of performance art in which the viewer would be immersed in the environment and became an active participant in works of art. During this time period, the idea of installation art became more popular. In fact, the Oxford English Dictionary for the first time documented the date of installation in referring to the art form in 1969.
The term of art installation became popularized in general use in the 70s, when more artists began to create works that did not fit for the standard model of the museum or gallery for depiction of works of art. Instead, many artists began to create workals that highlighted structures or filled with unconventional ways. In 1977 Walter de Maria createdNew York Earth Room, in which he filled the inner space measuring 3,600 square feet (334 square meters) with 250 cubic yards (191 cubic meters) of the ground totaling 22 inches (56 cm) deep.
Newer forms of art installation emphasize newer technologies. Examples include virtual reality, anticipated images and web art either in conjunction with the specificity of the location or instead of the specificity of the place. These new forms of art installation redefine internal space and create an even greater interactive environment.
