What is Octanol?

Octanol is a chemical called oily alcohol, which is a natural component in some essential oils, but can also be synthesized. It is approved by food and drug administration (FDA) in the United States as a food ingredient. This liquid alcohol has no color, but has a very strong and penetrating odor. It is used to produce foam controls and is also commonly used to produce chemical compounds called esters, which are used to produce fragrances in industry and to create different types of artificial flavors. There is some experimental medical testing by octanol to treat conditions including involuntary neurological tremor, such as those caused by essential tremor of disorder (ET). When combined with acetic acid, an ester called vinegar acetate is formed. It has a floral or herbal aroma and is used to make an artificial orange aroma and other advertising for food. Oith acetate is also used to produce various types of solvents used for waxes, oils and PRyskyřice.

Medical use of octanol to treat neurological tremor is still experimental, but some promising results have been obtained in scientific studies. It is known that small doses of ethanol, also known as pure alcohol and alcohol drink, provide relief from these species of involuntary tremors. We hope that other types of alcohol, such as Octanol, can give relief without causing intoxication.

Although approved as an additive, this liquid oily alcohol should not be used in large quantities or in its pure form, as it can be harmful. It can irritate the skin and eyes, cause redness and pain, and when handling it is recommended to wear safety glasses, gloves and protective clothing. One should rinse eyes with water if they come into contact with this substance and the skin should be thoroughly washed with soap and water in the event of contact. Inhalation of this substance can irritate the breathA longing and affect the central nervous system, causing dizziness, headaches, cough and even unconsciousness.

The word octanol is derived from the Latin word Octo, which means eight and the substance is named because it has eight atoms of carbon. There are four different types or isomers commonly referred to as octanol that have similar, though not identical properties. These four types are known more specifically as 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-octanol. This oily alcohol is flammable and may be a danger of fire if it is not properly processed.
