What is the Shad Festival?

Shad Festival takes place every spring in Lamberville, New Jersey to celebrate the return of Shada, Fish in the Family, to the Delaware River. For many years, the Delaware River has been so dirty that the number of shadows that appeared every spring decreased to a disturbingly low number. Like the canary in the coal Mine, which signals an unhealthy environment, the lack of a sufficient number of shadows sent a warning to environmentalists who gathered to clean the waterway. The Shad Festival took place for the first time in 1981 to designate an ecological milestone and now the two -day event is attended by thousands of tourists, shoppers and environmentalists.

The Delaware River is a partial boundary between New York and Pennsylvania and the entire border between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The Delaware River has been exposed to high pollution and several oil leaks over the years. These factors led to a decrease in the shadow population at the age of 70.

Shad are pDirect fish of salt water, but the freshwater rivers are floating to emerge in the spring. Unlike trout, which has a very similar reproductive ritual, many shadows will survive swimming back to the sea. Different types of shade are found in all areas of the Atlantic Ocean and also several seas all over the world. The shadow uses the deep waters of the Delaware River as friction, but the river has become so dirty that the shadow population in the Delaware River was almost completely reduced until environmental reforms were adopted.

In 1981, the city of Lamberville fell into difficult economic times. The city noticed that the pollution of the local Delaware River has improved and the 30 -inch (76.2 cm) toothless fish began to swim again to re -emerge. Local officials decided to organize the festival to celebrate the return of this bony fish, followed by a boom in tourism, eventually leading to an economic revival of the city. The Shad Festival, which has been held annually since then, consisted of all the equipment of most small urban festivals such as food and with withTanes for the sale of subjects, but also contains an educational component focused on ecology.

Shad festival usually takes place when Shad begins to tune. When they travel on the river, there are demonstrations called Shadows called Seineing, which catches fish in networks in the method used by the Indians Lenni Lenape, the original inhabitants of the area during colonial times. In addition to demonstrations and demonstrations of cooking, Shad festival also offers a number of sellers, music, art shows and others, including a poster auction in favor of a scholarship program for local medium seniors. The food has, but the main attraction is the shadow. The Shad Festival is eventually a celebration of the return of this unique fish and the return of tourism and economico Riverside.
