Important branch of external carotid artery
The common carotid artery branches into the external carotid artery and internal carotid artery in the neck. The internal carotid arteries enter the skull from the carotid arteries, supplying 3/5 of the anterior brain, intraorbital structures and forehead. The external carotid artery supplies the dura mater, the skull top, the oral and maxillofacial region, and the front of the neck.

It starts from the common carotid artery at the level of the upper edge of the thyroid cartilage and is located on the anterior and medial side of the internal carotid artery. It is divided into eight branches.
Superior thyroid artery
Ascending pharyngeal artery
Lingual artery
Facial artery
Occipital artery
Posterior auricular artery
Maxillary artery
Superficial temporal artery
