What is the Draize Test?

Draize test includes the use of animal subjects to test the levels of irritating cosmetic, households or pharmaceutical products. Among the two types of tests developed in 1944 and named for American pharmacologist John Henry Draize, the most commonly used types of Draize Eye Test and Draize Skin Test are. Laboratories can use different species of animals for testing the test, but the animal was most often preferred by a rabbit. In 2011, some laboratories accepted testing procedures that do not require live animals.

Scientists wanted to learn about the possible irritating effects that have different products for living tissues. The Draize Test exposes live animals to these substances and monitors the resulting damage. Rabbits have become popular objects for eye irritation tests because they have no tear channels, and therefore no tears to wash away a caustic solution. Technicians usually placed rabbits in the type of cover and revealed only their heads. Metal or plastic clips placed on the lid usually preventedčima flickering or closing.

with a fixed placement of six in nine rabbits would the technicians drip a solution directly into the eye of the animals. Concentrated solutions may contain flakes, powders or liquid substances. The technicians would then monitor the effects of the solution on the cornea tissue. Observation times usually occurred at regular intervals and could last during days. The longest recorded Draize Test allegedly happened for 18 days.

scientists historically used a number of different animal species for skin corrosion tests. This type of Draize Test generally required shaving considerable stains of fur test subject. The skin then got a abrasion at the bottom, often by applying adhesive tape directly to the skin. The technician quickly removed the tape and repeated the process to the sufdoo to a full amount of dermal abrasion.

The test product was then applied to the skin and the type and degree of corrosion of the skin was monitored. Test animals were generallylimited in a manner that prevented the removal of the irritant agent. During the specified period, the results were monitored and recorded.

As an alternative to Draize test, organization such as cosmetic, toilet and fragrant associations, finances other products for product testing. These organizations support growing necessary tissues from cell cultures. Some companies have developed methods of growing epidermal keratinocytes on stratified spinocellular epithelium, similar to cornea or dermal tissue. Research laboratories can also obtain animal and human corneal tissue from the eye shores.
