What is Bartholin's abscess?

Bartholin's abscess is an infection in the bartholine gland located in female genitals. On both sides of the laboratory minor there are two small bartholin glands of pea size, commonly referred to as vaginal lips. Bartholin's abscess is formed when a small opening of the bartholine gland is blocked due to irritation, infection, sexually transmitted diseases, poor circulation or in very rare cases of a tumor. The blocked gland becomes pus filled with a painful lump.

The purpose of Bartholin glands is to release lubricating fluids during sexual excitement. When the woman is waking up, this fluid is released and slightly moistens the labial opening of the vagina. Thus, the highly sensitive vaginal area is lubricated and becomes more comfortable for intercourse. If the infection is serious, fever may also be present. If matter continues to swell and remains painful and remains painful. The diagnosis of Bartholin's abscess is made by a physician performing physicianical examination of female genitalia and possible laboratory testing of fluid in the abscess.

Treatment options depend on the severity of Bartholin's abscess. If the lump is very swollen and painful, the doctor could decide to make a small cut to the abscess and drain the cavity. Antibiotics could also be prescribed if a fever is present. After the infected abscess is exhausted, the physician may recommend soaking the affected area in warm water several times a day. This helps to alleviate discomfort in the area and promotes drainage and healing.

For reactual abscesses, removal of bartholine gland or procedure called Marsupialization can be designed by a doctor. The removal of the gland is rare, but is an alternative to the recurring abscess formations. The Marsupialization procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia and placed stitches on each side of the gland to create a permanent opening for drainage. Marsupialization is not recommended if it isActive infection present.

There is no preventive treatment of Bartholin's abscess. Exercise of safe sex by condom and performing good personal hygiene is always a consideration for maintaining optimal personal health. In the first symptom of Bartholin's abscess or cyst, some form of treatment of self -care, such as soaking the area in warm water, helps open the blocked gland. If the lump persists and after a few days of self -healing becomes painful, then a doctor should consult.
