- Most of the malignant tumors on the appendix are carcinoid. Carcinoid is a kind of gastrointestinal malignant tumor. The tumor is small and grows slowly. The symptoms are usually not obvious and metastasis can occur.
- Carcinoids are rare. If the carcinoid tumor secretes peptide amine hormones, the patient will develop symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, asthma, and hepatomegaly, which is medically called a carcinoid syndrome. This sign rarely occurs in appendicitis. Carcinoids can develop at any age, with an average age of onset of 40 years. Appendiceal carcinoids have a low degree of malignancy, small tumors, mostly less than 2 cm in diameter, and rarely metastasize. Most of the appendix carcinoids grow from the top 1/3 of the appendix, so it is not easy to block the appendix lumen and rarely cause appendicitis. If the carcinoid grows in 1/3 of the appendix, appendicitis usually occurs due to blockage of the lumen.
- During the operation, because the tumor is small, it is not easy to find or mistaken for fecal stones. A correct diagnosis can be obtained after pathological examination. Appendicoid carcinoid can also have appendix perforation, which is usually found after surgery.
