What is sialorrhea?
In human biology, sialorrhea is a health condition characterized by drooling or excessive salivation. Smart can be caused by the production of too many saliva or reduced ability to swallow or combine these two factors. There are a number of other terms, which are also known to sialorrhea, including ptyalism, hyperactive flow of saliva, polysialia and sialism.
Saliva is made in the mouth of three main salivary glands, parotid glands, submandibular glands and sublingual glands, as well as from several smaller glands. The amount of saliva produced is affected by several different factors, and if much more saliva is formed than required, it can result in drooling. It is particularly evident if the excess of saliva is accompanied by impaired swallowing.
The causes of sialorrhea may change. It may be a symptom of one of a number of neurological disorders such as brain palsy and Parkinson's disease. EA sialorrhdiagnosis can also be associated with infection or poisoning. Especially heavy metal poisoning like otRava mercury, tends to cause drooling. Insecticide poisoning and nerve gases are also known to have a similar effect. The most commonly reported are antipsychotic drugs, especially a drug called clozapine. Some of the drugs that are used to treat Alzheimer's disease and related disorders are also often associated with slind.
treatment of sialorrhea usually depends on the root cause. In the case of a side effect caused by prescribed medicines, then treatment is often limited to control of excessive salivation to a point where it can be controlled without much impact on the patient. While drooling is often considered a cosmetic problem for patients, this can lead to hygiene problems, dehydration and skin problems around the mouth. In some cases, drooling can also significantly prevent the patient's ability to successfully participate in speech therapy, if necessary, for example in some neurological disorders.
There are certain drugs that can be used in the treatment of sialorrhea. These drugs largely operate affecting the nervous system to reduce salivation, but often have significant side effects. In extreme cases, when drooling is a long -term problem, surgical treatment of sialorrhea has been used in the form of removal of one or more main salivary glands.
