What is sudden deafness?

sudden deafness or sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) is experienced when the individual experiences a sudden loss of hearing in one ear. This deafness can occur suddenly or for about three days. Some individuals may not even realize the loss of hearing until they try to use the affected ear. SSHL is diagnosed with a simple hearing test and can be caused by many factors. Although this deafness is generally temporary, it is important that anyone who experiences a sudden loss of hearing, consult a doctor immediately to be treated. Hearing is measured in decibels and frequencies. If there is someone who experienced a sudden loss of hearing, he decided that he had a hearing loss of 30 decibels at at least three connecting frequency points, the diagnosis of SSHL is made by a doctor. 30 hearing decision Bel corresponds to half the normal level of hearing.

SSHL is most common in individuals who are 30-60 years old, although it is not obvious. This deafness may intervene for a number of possible reasons, including trauma,Abnormal tissue growth, circulatory problems or immunological disease. Possible causes of sudden deafness are numerous and the exact reason can only be determined in about 15 percent of these cases.

Although many individuals who experience sudden deafness first notice the loss of hearing after waking up in the morning, others could experience a sudden sound of crackling just before the hearing loss. Others may never recognize hearing loss until they try to use the affected ear. For example, deafness may not be noticed until the individual attempts to use the phone or when someone speaks to the deaf. Tinnitus is often experienced dizziness and ringing sound, referred to as tinnitus, those suffering from sudden deafness. Some sufferers may experience both conditions and others can only be exposed to one or the other.

This form of hearing loss is often temporary. Patients with SSHL may have a totalno recovery without medical treatment. This recovery can occur gradually for several weeks, or it could be as spontaneous as when hearing loss occurred. Regardless of this fact, anyone who experiences a sudden loss of hearing should consult a doctor immediately.

SSHL treatment differs depending on the specific situation. If it is possible to determine the cause of hearing loss, treatment may include antibiotics or reduce current drugs that could cause sudden deafness. In most cases where a specific cause cannot be determined, steroids are administered as treatment. Although most individuals who experience sudden deafness will recover completely, a small percentage may suffer from a gradual loss of hearing after the initial recovery.
