What is the poppy test?

In medicine, doctors usually take the poppy before surgical patients suspected of spinning fistula, an abnormal path between the bladder and the large intestine. After consumption of poppy seeds, patients do not get them with this condition, causing the seeds to appear in the urine. Although the test is not a standard procedure in many countries, the poppy test can provide doctors with accurate evaluation and allow urologists to assess whether the patient requires surgery.

The poppy test was discovered by a group of German urologists in 1994 and was described in the Journal of Urology in 2001. From 1994 to 1999, German urologists administered 8.8 ounces (250 g) poppy seeds to 17 patients. After monitoring of each patient for two days urologists found that 11 patients were found that the root fistula had passed the seeds in the urine. Six patients who had no Kolovesic fistula, the net is as follows. Patients who go through urine rectally have the re -elaboration of urinary tract infections or have been diagnosePneumaturia or faecaluria, generally have a spinning fistula. In these cases, doctors usually take a poppy test and, if the test reveals a positive result, surgery to remove the fistula.

In general, doctors use several diagnostic methods to determine whether the patient has spoiled fistulas, such as fluoroscopy, computed tomography (CT) scanning or endoscopy. Although alternative diagnostic methods generally diagnose the disease, the results are only 70% to 80% accurate. When studying TTEST Poppy seeds, doctors found that the test provides 100% accuracy in patient diagnosis, the most accurate test available.

In addition to the accuracy of the poppy seed test, doctors also found that the procedure is significantly less expensive for performing. In a study conducted between 2000 and 2006, doctors used three methods to diagnose 20 patients with confirmed cases of wheel fistula-radioaCiticated chrome test, CT scanning and poppy test. The cost of managing the poppy seed method is approximately $ 5 (USD), but the cost of managing a radioactive chrome test or CT scan can exceed $ 500.
