What is a venous distension?

venous distension occurs when the veins swell, because it moves through them more blood than it should be. There are a number of reasons why veins and arteries can be distanced and one of the more serious causes is heart disease. Doctors often observe the jugular vein in the patient's throat as part of the process of diagnosis of this disease. If the vein seems swollen, it is a strong indicator that blood pressure is too high and that the heart does not work normally. If there is more blood than usual, the patient may experience a venous distension. Blood volume varies normally, so a slight swelling of the lives may not be a reason for alarm. However, when large veins clearly spread, it may be a symptom of the disease.

Patients with congestive heart failure often have a venous distension. In this state, blood flow in the body is at risk because the heart is not able to pump enough blood through blood vessels. When the kidneys do not come into contact with sufficient blood, they maintain salt as a way to draw more liquid into the bloodstream, fromSaceruming blood volume and normally to fix the problem of insufficient blood flow. Unfortunately, in patients with congestive heart failure, the retention of additional salt worsens because it causes a venous distension.

When the veins are swollen, the patient's blood pressure is higher than it should be. Blood pressure is the pressure that blood places on the walls of veins and arteries and is naturally higher if these blood vessels move so much that the walls must spread to adapt. The venous distense can emphasize the walls of the veins, leading to a rupture that could kill or seriously injure the patient.

Most of the veins are buried deep in the body, making the doctors more difficult to observe the venous distension. However, the jugular vein in the throat is a large vein that lies near the skin surface. When this vein extends, it may seem swollen. The doctor can observe blood flow through this venue to approach the pressure on the walls. If jugular venous distension is severe, it may be a strong indicator that the patient has heart failure.
