What Is a Ratchet?
A ratchet is defined as a gear with a rigid toothed surface or a friction surface on the outer or inner edge, and is an important component of a ratchet mechanism. [1] Step-by-step movement by the push action of the pawl. The characteristic of this meshing movement is that the ratchet can only rotate in one direction, but not backward.
- The ratchet is the main component of the ratchet mechanism. The spring forces the stop pawl into contact with the ratchet. The rocker is sleeved on the ratchet shaft, the pawl is mounted on the rocker, and the ratchet is fixed on the driven shaft with a key. [1]
- When the rocker of the active part swings counterclockwise, the driving pawl is inserted into the tooth groove of the ratchet wheel and pushes the ratchet wheel through an angle. At this time, the stopping pawl slides on the tooth back of the ratchet wheel. When the rocker of the active part swings clockwise, the stopper claw prevents the ratchet wheel from rotating in the clockwise direction, but the driving pawl can slide over the back of the ratchet teeth, so the ratchet wheel is stationary. In this way, when the rocker makes continuous reciprocating swings, the ratchet moves in a unidirectional intermittent motion. Among them, the reciprocating swing of the driving member can be obtained by a cam mechanism of a swing follower, a crank rocker mechanism, or a hydraulic transmission and an electromagnetic device. [1]
- The gear tooth type ratchet mechanism is simple in structure, convenient in manufacturing, and reliable in operation. The size of the ratchet angle can be adjusted step by step, but because the pawl slides on the back of the ratchet teeth during return, it is easy to wear and generate noise. In addition, in order for the pawl to smoothly engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel, the displacement of the pawl must be greater than the corresponding displacement of the ratchet s angle of movement, which results in idle travel and impact. The friction ratchet mechanism does not have the above-mentioned disadvantages, and the rotation angle of the driven wheel can be adjusted steplessly, but because the sliding between the contact surfaces is easy to occur, the accuracy and reliability of its movement is worse than that of the toothed ratchet mechanism. Generally, the ratchet mechanism is not suitable for high-speed or high-accuracy applications. [2]

- 2. Industrial ratchet products. The utility model relates to a manual screw tightening tool, a single-head, double-head multi-standard movable handle ratchet wrench (fixed hole). It is connected by the main plum sleeve with different specifications and sizes from the plum sleeve through the male key and the male key of the hinge key. Because a plum sleeve has two specifications of a plum-shaped through hole, it can be used for tightening two types of screws, thereby expanding the scope of use and saving raw materials and labor costs. The movable trigger can easily adjust the use angle of the wrench. This wrench is used for the tightening operation of screws, and has the characteristics of strong applicability, convenient use and low cost.
- 3. Ratchet (musical instrument) is a kind of percussion instrument. The principle is the same as that of industrial ratchets. It is equipped with a gear that can only rotate in one direction, and several thin wood chips are mounted on the teeth. When the gear rotates, the teeth touch the thin wood chip to bend it, and the rear wood chip bounces back to the original position and contacts the next tooth. During the friction and collision between the two, a "slap, pop" sound is generated.
- The ratchet effect, also known as the wheel-control effect, refers to the irreversibility of human consumption habits after formation, that is, it is easy to adjust upwards, but difficult to adjust downwards.
