What is the only pulley?
One pulley is a device composed of a wheel on axle, above which a rope, a cord or a similar implementation is looping. The purpose is to change the direction of force applied to one end of the rope or to achieve a similar purpose involving a change in the direction of force. For example, a single pulley may exist in an increased position with a weight at one end of the rope that is looping above the pulley. The person standing next to the weight could pull the free end of the rope down, causing the weight to increase. The force is applied downwards, but the weight rises as the pulley reverse the direction of force.

There are many different types of compound pulleys that can be used to further adjust the direction of force or more precisely control the movement of the object.
