What are thiazide diuretics?

diuretics, sometimes referred to as water tablets, are medicines that act in different areas of the kidneys to support urination. These drugs are usually prescribed to treat high blood pressure. Thiazide diuretics, specifically affect distal intricate tubules (DCT) kidneys. DCT are part of the kidneys where salt is reabsorbed. By affecting this type of drug on DCT, it generally helps to reduce the amount of salt and water in the body. These combined effects of the drug inside the body often lead to a decrease in high blood pressure. Thiazide diuretics are also used in the treatment of swelling. Edema is a state where swelling in arms and legs occurs due to the accumulation of fluids in the tissue caused by heart failure and other diseases.

The side effects of Thiazide diuretics include reduced potassium levels known as hypokalaemia and magnesium, known as hypomagnesiamia, as well as increased calcium calcium levels, also known as hypercalcaemy. The imbalance of these substances in the body may result in confusion, irregular heart ryedarkness and weakness. Patients may also have an increased amount of sugar, fat and uric acid in the blood. Other side effects include rashes, itching, vomiting, headache and dizziness. During the treatment of thiazide diuretics, careful monitoring of patients is often necessary to monitor their reactions.

thiazide diuretics are generally not recommended in patients with kidney failure, as renal impairment significantly reduces the effectiveness of the drug. Patients are also recommended to eat potassium -rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, as these drugs can reduce potassium levels inside the body.
