What is lobelia?

lobelia is a flowering plant that is located around the world in a warm mild to tropical climate. There are approximately 400 different known plant species, with several of which extends to colder areas. Other names include wild tobacco, Indian tobacco, poke weed, pukeweed, asthma weed, weed gag, vomiting, emetic weeds, cardinal flower, red lobelia and blue lobelia.

Many lobelies are grown as decorative garden plants. The plant is also prominently used in natural and herbal medicine. The native Americans used the herb to treat respiratory and muscle complaints. Traditionally, it was also used as cleansing. Its modern use is the treatment of asthma and food poisoning and stop smoking. Lobelia is relaxing and nervous depressions that can relieve tension and anxiety. Thomson founded an alternative form of medicine known as Jakothomiasonianism, which introduced many herbs previously unknown in America, including Lobelius and Goldenseal. Modern research shows that lobelia contains natural alkaloids known as lobelides that have shown positive effects in the treatment of cancer cells resistant to the drug. It is assumed that some species will cure syphilis, although scientific research has not been carried out to prove or refute this claim. One particular species, L. chinensis, is considered one fifty basic herbs of traditional Chinese medicine.

There are many domestic drugs using lobelia and the most common syrup coughs. Home syrup coughs can bI create a combination of tea made of lobelia and other coughing suppressing herbs such as mullein and wild cherry bark, with honey. Lobelia is almost never used independently as a treatment of any condition, because of its strength and must be combined with other herbs.

lobelia is very similar to nicotine and should not be used internally by children, pregnant women or suffering heart disease. No one should take it in large quantities or for a long time. The use of more than 50 mg per day can lead to suppressed breathing, lowering blood pressure or even coma. The herb should only be administered by a doctor, qualified in herbal or natural medicine.
