What are viburnum?
Viburnum is a bush of the genus Viburnum, a widely refined and very distributed shrub or tree of the Zimoles family with white or sometimes pink flowers. Gardeners consider them useful for their versatility and hardness, perfection of their flowers and leaves and their ability to grow in a range of soils in and out of the sun. However, the ideal conditions in which viburnum should be cultivated are in clay and heavy soil with a lot of light. It prefers acid, neutral and basic types of soil and the soil must be moist. Viburnum was once included in a family known as caprifoliaceae, but today is classified as members of the Adoxaceae family. When they are found in hot or mild areas, viburnum usually remains green throughout the year. At colder temperatures, however, are deciduous. They have simple leaves, while their flowers are small pink or cream -colored and Pentamerous in their arrangement of petals. These flowers are formed in what is called corymb, branching the apparatus of the plant with long tracks, with sterile flowers at the top of Corymb to act as a bait for pollinators.
Viburnum fruit is a spherical drupe that contains the seed inside and has outer skin, which is usually purple or reddish color or otherwise black. Although birds and animals eat freely from fruit viburnum, it is known that some species are slightly poisonous to humans. These include V. Opulus fruits that have a toxic effect when consuming human being and can cause vomiting.
V. Lentago, also known as Nannyberry, Sheepberry or Sweet Viburnum, is edible diversity of fruit and is commonly used in jaming. This edible variety is in May to June and the seeds of maturation between September and October. It is originally from the northeastern and Midwest United States and is also found in some parts of Canada. The viburnum bark is also known to be an effective alternative herbal remedy for suffering asthma.
