What is a citrus hybrid?

Citrus hybrid is the result of exceeding any two types of citrus plants. Citrus species can easily hybridize and many common citrus fruits are in fact citrus hybrids. He even thought that some types of citrus that naturally spread in the wild could actually be hybrids. Thanks to this easy hybridization, it is unclear how many natural species were originally and new hybrids are still created to this day. Varieties such as oranges, tangelos and lime date dating ancient, while grapefruits and orangelos are newer examples of citrus hybrids. Oranges are the result of ancient hybridization, possibly a mixture of pomelo and mandarin, while the lemon was genetically associated with acidic orange and lemon. Grapefruit is a newer Hybrid Pomelo and Sweet Orange, which comes into the 19th century. Most Common cultivars Tangelo were the result of the transition of Mandarin and Grapefruit and date until the beginning of the 20th century. Orangelo perhaps naturally hybridized, the species was first recognized inthe 1950s.

Several Australian and New Zealand fruits such as kumquat are now assumed that they belong to the family of citrus. The position of these fruits in the family of citrus has led to hybrids such as Sunquat, the cross between lemons and kumquats and kalamondin from Tangerines and Kumquats. Kumquats are sometimes placed in their own family, but easily hybridize with citrus fruits and resulted in a series of citrus hybrid fruits.

The ease of hybridization also means that citrus fruit seeds can grow to bring fruit that has little similarity to his parent. This led all commercial citrus growers to use the grafting method of the desired Citrusivar cultivar for the root supply. This can ensure that the required fruit is grown and at the same time provides another advantage of using the established root supply.

Hybrid Citrus allowed four basic types to become dozens of different citrus varietiesFruits that people enjoy today. Without a hybrid of citrus, there would be no sweet orange, lemon or many other citrus fruits that have become common food around the world. The ease with which the hybridization of citrus can result in some problems for commercial growers, but the total variety of citrus fruit would not otherwise be possible.
