What is a numbat?

Numbat, Myrmecobius fasciatus is an Australian mast. Although he originally called the banded ant, the term fell into abuse because it is somewhat inaccurate. Nutbats are listed as vulnerable to the extinction of the International Union for Nature (IUCN), mostly due to the loss of habitats and abundance of predators. It weighs very little, usually between 1 and 2 pounds (450 to 900 grams). They differ in color from gray to reddish -brown and are identifiable by a horizontal strip pattern similar to zebra over the back.

Numbats has a reproductive period between December and January every year. The gestation lasts only 14 days and most of the numbats give birth between four and six young people. The mother carries children with her for about six months and leaves them in hidden burrows around July and occasionally returns to treat them. After reaching ripeness, it is a lonely creature that connects to other species only for the purposes of mating.

Despite JEjich initial classification as anteatters, Numbat prefers food almost exclusively consisting of termites. Numbats are daily, remain awake during the day when thermites are active. Despite the strong claws for their size, Numbat is not strong enough to break the walls of the termites and therefore have to wait for thermites to appear. As the Termit lessons change during the season, Numbat will change their hours to match. Numbat adult can consume 20,000 termites a day.

Numbats builds a small burrow, often in hollow logs or trees. They align their homes with soft plant material, mainly grass and flowers. These burrows are generally 3.3 to 6.6 ft (1 to 2 m) and contain a sleep chamber. These burrows are safe concessions for Numbats at night and may also be used as a shelter from predators.

Numbats are listed as a vulnerable species for several different reasons. The determination of spices extends in southwest Australia. Once occupied a significantly greater domestic reach, but the spread of humanAgriculture destroyed most of their northern habitats. Wildfirs are common throughout the habitat, but unfortunately they cause damage to this and many other species.

The greatest danger to NUCBATS is the proliferation of non -native hunting species, such as domestic cats and foxes. Before the European settlers arrived on the continent, Australia had few creatures that survived by hunting small rodents and Marsupial animals. Imports for hunting and pets for pets caused huge and perhaps irreversible damage to many native species, including Numbat.

Today, Numbats exist in the wild only in the small area of Australia. Due to the growing rarity of animals, Perth Zoo and Australian Department and Protection, they founded a breeding program for the type of species. Perth Zoo operates the adopture-a-numbat program, which uses revenues to finance the program of breeding and restoration of animals for animals.
