What is Serrac?

is a large piece of ice ice, which in some cases can be as large as the house. The Serracs tend to be formed at the intersection of multiple cracks and are known to be extremely unstable. If SERAC collapses while people navigate with a glacier or mountain, it can cause serious damage or even death depending on the size of the SERAC and the position of climbers. Most climbers are aware of the potential danger that represents these large pieces of ice and are careful to avoid them whenever possible. SERACS can remain consistent over several seasons or can often collapse and reform, depending on weather conditions and altitude. The other serrations are robust and can be liberally distributed through a glacier or mountains. From the distance, the Serracs field can resemble cheese, at least with a striking eye. By the way, the name of this cheese is derived from Latin for "whey".

When navigating around Serrac, climbers must be very careful. They should not be anchored to the SerraCs or the Serracs to be used to submit. Even the SERAC touch can be dangerous because sufficient pressure at the wrong point can cause SERAT to break or drop. In the case of a very large serak, the results may be catastrophic; In 2008, for example, the falling SERAC interrupted the climbing line to K2, one of the highest mountains in the world, leading to the death of 11 climbers. Some of the climbers were imprisoned on the mountain by losing the line, while others were crushed by falling ice. In 1981, the falling SERAC also killed 11 climbers and distributed car pieces of ice explosive through Mount Ranier.

You often recognize Serrac if you know what to look for. The Serracs tend to stand out around the surrounding glacier or snow fields and often look very dense and block, although they can be cracked with cracks and fractures that betray their instability. These dangers withThey often form near the edges of cracks or on steep mountain slopes, and often their danger is obvious for the occasional viewer, because SERAC may look as if it has dropped at any time.
