What is a voluntary muscle?

Voluntary muscle, often called skeletal muscle, is one of the three types of muscle in the body. Most of the voluntary muscles are used to move bones, although some such as muscles in the face are used to create movements under the skin. Unlike heart or smooth muscles, a voluntary muscle can be controlled by a conscious mind.

Within the musculoskeletal system, every voluntary muscle is used to move. Most of them are associated with bones of connective tissue called tendons. The muscle is attached to a bone at a place called its origin. It then runs along the length of the entire bone and is attached to the bone on the other side of the joint when inserted. The language is also a voluntary muscle and is connected to the body at only one end. A wide range of movement in tongue is possible because it consists of a group of muscles that work closely.

Every voluntary muscle is made up of muscle cells. These cells are connected to fibers that run along the entire length of the muscle.
