What is the mass density?
Bulk density is a physical property of granular solid, such as soil, sand or powder. It is calculated by dividing the weight of the volume of the material that occupies the volume. This includes not only the volume of the particles themselves, but also the volume of space and the weight of any material between particles.
The density of a continuous cell, such as a metal rod, is simply its volume divided by its weight. Such an item is considered incompressible and as such its density is essentially constant. The tool used extracts the fixed soil volume, so only the weight should be determined to calculate. Other methods that include the determination of weight and volume may also be used.
