What is a tone decoder?
The tone decoder is a device that can interpret audio frequencies and their wavelengths on phones and other digital tone devices. They have been used since the at least sixties. One of their first uses was telephone operators who helped clients call long distances. They can also be used as a signal for local advertising cable television and as a device for spying when watching calls from and on the phone. Since the telephone tone has two frequencies, it is known as dual tone multifrequency or DTMF tone. There are 16 tones that can be used with this technology, but usually the phone uses 12.
