What are rehabilitation physicians?
The rehabilitation physician is also known as a physicator. Rehabilitation physicians are doctors who work to develop function in people with disabilities and help those who have suffered from debilitating injuries or diseases to regain function. Rehabilitation doctors work with people who have suffered from stroke, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries and sports -related injuries. Six of these specialties are officially recognized in the United States. They include pain medicine, pediatric rehabilitation, rehabilitation of spinal cord injuries, sports medicine, neuromuscular medicine and hospice and palliative care. Other specialties that are not officially recognized may include amputation rehabilitation, musculoskeletal medicine, rehabilitation of traumatic brain damage and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation.
