What is the Coxsackie virus?

Coxsackie virus is a blanket for a family in the family picornaviridae , part of a group of viruses known as enterovirra , which can cause a number of health conditions. There are many Coxsackie serotypes, including groups known as Coxsackie A and B. Like other enteroviruses, Coxsackie virus lives in the intestinal tract, and is highly virulent, easily passes between people with active viral infections. Many people are infected with a virus in this group at a certain point in their lives and some people carry the Coxsackie virus without experienceing any symptoms.

These viruses are named for the city in New York, where they were first discovered. They are transmitted among people when incorrect hygiene is observed, such as daily care, while children are not washed hands after using the toilet. It can also be spread by contaminated food and water. Most Coxsackie viruses are very contagious, but they raspolét on serious symptoms.

Most often people experience what they refer to as "stomach flu" when they are infected with Coxsackie virus. They may have a slight fever, chills, diarrhea, convulsions and vomiting and the condition is resolved within a few days. In some cases, people develop rashes that can turn into diseases of the hands, legs and mouth, a condition that occurs mainly in young children; Hand, leg and mouth are not the same, by the way, as an animal disease known as a leg, mouth or hooves and mouth. People can also develop herpangine or ulcers in the mouth, along with haemorrhagic conjunctivitis, inflammation of the eye.

More seriously, the Coxsackie virus can enter the heart where it can cause serious health problems. Heart viral infections can be difficult to treat and can cause permanent damage or result in the need for heart transplantation. These viruses can also lead to meningitis, a serious viral brain infection, and some studies have associated with diabetes and others ofBirds of prey.

There is no treatment or vaccination for infection of Coxsackie virus. Many patients are recovering with supportive care for pain management or discomfort associated with infection. In the event of a more serious infection, the patient will usually have to be hospitalized to control infection and its symptoms. If the patient develops confusion, joint pain, dizziness or changed level of consciousness, it is time to see a doctor for serious medical attention.
