What Is Dysmorphophobia?

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), which is called physical deformity disorder or deformity phobia, is a physical form disorder.

The etiology of each person is different, but usually physical, psychological and environmental factors play a role.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy can treat body phobia. In a treatment study with 83 participants, patients who had experienced 12 weeks of cognitive behavioral therapy had a marked improvement in their condition, and 81.5% of the participants no longer showed symptoms of physical deformity after treatment. In addition, in a meta-analysis, the efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy after 16 weeks of treatment was significantly better than that of drugs.
Cognitive behavioral therapy may work because it strengthens the connection between the orbitofrontal cortex and the amygdala [5] .
