What is Flash lung edema?

Flash pulmonary edema (FPE) is a medical emergency marked with a sudden accumulation of fluid in the lungs. Often associated with myocardial infarction or heart attack, lightning lung edema can contribute to extensive swelling and possible organs failure if treatment is delayed or missing. Stabilization of the condition, oxygen and drugs and identification of the cause of lung edema is necessary. It should be noted that despite rapid treatment, it is possible for someone to deteriorate quickly, resulting in death.

Due to the urgency represented by the flash lung edema, the diagnosis is generally confirmed as soon as the individual is stabilized. In general, blood collection is performed to evaluate oxygen levels and kidney function and to check the impaired cardiovascular function. Other diagnostic tools such as ultrasound and X -ray may be used to further evaluate the condition of the heart and lungs. The lungs serve as the main hub for oxygenation of blood. Small bags in the lungs facilitate the removal of carbon dioxide from the blood as it passes into the left side of the heart. When the arteries narrow, usually due to plaque accumulation, blood flow deteriorates. Without sufficient pressure on the circulation of blod with lungs, blood accumulates, allowing the penetration of fluids into the bag. As the bags are filled with liquid, there is a lack of air that forces the lungs to work harder.

When a myocardial infarction occurs, blood flow to the heart is interrupted for a moment. The resulting heart damage often forces the heart and pcheeks to work harder. It is not possible to balance the loss of function with demand, the ability of the heart bend and pump blood drastically limited. The reduction of pressure significantly worsens the blood flow and leaves the lungs vulnerable to the collection of fluids and the lung edema.

Initial treatment of lightning pulmonary edema includes administration of oxygen and medicines to stabilize the condition of the individual. Elimination of excess fluid from the lungs and restoring the correct blood flow is necessary. Diuretic drugs such as furosemide are often administered to reduce fluid retention and expand the affected blood vessels.If it is known that the pulmonary event is accompanied by a heart attack, other medicines, known as reducing after loading to ease the heart stress.
