What is progressive polio bulbar?
Progressive Bulbar Palsy is a disorder that damages the muscles Bulbar in the cortex, spinal cord and brain stem of the affected person. It is classified as a disease of motor neurons (MND). Because it usually affects the areas of the brain that control, swallowing and chewing, these functions are usually affected by a condition. Other areas of the body may also be affected by this disease. When developing in children, it is often referred to as infantile progressive Bulbar. The disorder is usually slow, but aggressive. The person who is diagnosed with this disease will have only a few years. Weak jaws, neck and face muscles together with drooling and suffocation are also often reported. A person with this disease can make sure he cannot move his tongue and make it difficult or impossible to eat food. Talking usually also becomes tough and eventually one does not have to talk to it at all.
may also cause other symptoms, such as an uncontrollable crying or laughter. These are known as emotional lability and often happen without warning, and for no reason. Occasionally, the progressive polio of the bulbs can even affect the hands or legs of a person, which makes them weak. Sometimes this loss of force on the limbs is so fine that it will not notice it immediately.
Aspiration of pneumonia is often the cause of death for those who have this aggressive motor neuron disorder. The inability to swallow or a gag may result in inhalation of food or drink it consumes. When this happens, food or drink falls into the lungs, which increases the chance of getting this pneumonia.
treatment of progressive palsy is generally symptoms control. Some types of drugs can be used to reduce muscle cramps and any pain associated with degenerating muscles. Physical therapies are often recommended to maintain muscles in action. In some cases, the neck surgery can help the affected person to swallow. A nurse or a qualified carer can beprompted to help a person with food if surgery is not a possibility or cannot work. In order to help with changing emotions and depression, which often occurs in progressive polio Bulbar, the patient can prescribe antidepressants.
