What Is Chip Formation?
The excess material that is removed during the cutting process is called a chip. Chip formation is a complex process. The chip formation mechanism is different under different conditions, so the chip will show different forms. When cutting plastic materials, chips are formed due to the shear slip of the workpiece material, so the shapes of the chips are band-shaped, crushed, and unitary. When processing brittle materials, chips are formed due to crack propagation in the workpiece. Therefore, its morphology is mainly chipped chips, but continuous band or shear chips can also be obtained under certain conditions. [1]
