What are ophthalmic lasers?

Ophthalmic lasers are used by specially trained doctors to perform many fine, precise procedures involving eye treatment. Lasers used for medicinal purposes differ in the amount and type of energy produced. Some lasers cut tissue while others inhibit bleeding of the cauterization of blood vessels. Other lasers provide combined treatment and can tissue and stop bleeding. Ophthalmologists use laser technology for various visual treatment.

The laser generally consists of an electric current flowing through a plasma tube that contains gas or a solid crystalline substance. The energy produced in this way is emitted as a concentrated beam of light. Manufacturers usually name ophthalmic lasers for a substance contained in the plasma tube. Argon lasers emit a greenish light beam that produces heat and helps in coagulation. Lasers yttrium aluminum girnet (yag) produce a beam with higher power, which is useful for cutting tissue.

Offtalmic lasers uThey can quickly perform gentle procedures with minimal discomfort for patients. Since the eye is subject to less real physical contact, laser ophthalmic operations have fewer infection risks. Because these procedures are usually less disturbing and cause less tissue trauma, surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, which usually requires less recovery time.

doctors often use argon lasers producing heat for cauterization purposes. These ophthalmic lasers can be used to seal bleeding from small blood vessels or to repair holes or tears of retina in patients with diabetic retinopathy. This laser can also be used to improve the vision of those with bleeding or scarring that are commonly found in patients with macular degeneration. Ophthalmologists also use argon lasers to increase liquid for people suffering from open angle glaucoma.

Excimer ™It is one of the ophthalmic lasers commonly used for eye treatment in-Situ keratomileusis (lasik). This device can eliminate tissue, which is a fraction of hair in width with every pulse. This type of ophthalmic surgery involves removing a small amount of normally rounded cornea and forming a flattened surface. The process changes light refraction into the eye, changes focusing and improves vision.

Laser Holmium usually uses infrared light rays to transform the cornea by limiting tissue without cutting. Ophthalmologists generally use this procedure for repairing astigmatism and foresight. When treatment proves inefficient, doctors can also use YAG eye laser to place microscopic holes in IRIS, allowing proper circulation and drainage of fluids in patients with closed glaucoma angles.
