Combined chemotherapy regimens for many cancer treatments
The so-called combined chemotherapy refers to the use of several chemotherapeutic drugs at the same time or successively during a chemotherapy course. In contrast, a course of treatment uses only one drug, which is called a single drug.
At present, a variety of clinical cancer treatments have combined chemotherapy programs.
Due to the superiority of combined chemotherapy, the current single-drug regimen has been eliminated and has become history. (See details for superiority below)
Compared with single medication, combined chemotherapy has obvious advantages.
(1) The combination of chemotherapeutic drugs with different mechanisms of action means that it has a synergistic effect in killing tumor cells, thereby improving the efficacy.
(2) Through the use of several drugs, the possibility of significantly increasing the toxic and side effects of the single drug due to excessive dosage and long time of the drug is avoided.
(3) Long-term, repeated use of the same drug is still one of the factors that cause tumor resistance. Combined chemotherapy can remove resistance factors, thereby reducing the possibility of cancer cells developing resistance.
(4) Most chemotherapeutic drugs cannot or rarely enter the brain, and therefore cannot prevent or treat brain metastases. Combined use of a chemotherapeutic drug that can enter the brain can make up for the shortcomings of many drugs in this regard.
