What is Porron?
Porron is a traditional Spanish wine ship that comes specifically from Catalonia. It is not a mistake that the word, pronounced "poor-ahn", contains the English word pour . The only purpose of Porron was to drink wine, usually at a large table where there were many people. All PORRONS have two holes: one top, allowing the server to fill it, and the discharge on the side from which the guests drink.
The balloon -shaped base is ended with a fine grooved neck, usually a closed cork. Extra discharge on the side of the container usually starts about a thumb (about 2 cm) from the base and projects upwards at an angle of 45 °. The tip of this discharge is almost always very narrow and can be curved or straight.
The design of Porron should eliminate the need for cups. The wrapped neck usually makes it easier to grasp and walk around the table while the large bottom holds a lot of wine. The outflow along the side, n tongue to the mouth, projects a narrow stream of wine, similar to the current of the drinking fountain. Guests do not have to download lips on the discharge, so it is safe for using more people.
Porron drinking usually requires a lot of practice. One must tilt the head back, open the mouth very wide and hold the porron about 4 inches (about 8 cm) from the mouth. The loading of downwards towards the chin should stream the wine directly on the tongue, although the impractical finding, which instead streams on the forehead or shirt. When drinking, the user must reduce the narrow discharge towards the mouth and at the same time tilt the container again. In general, only those who have experienced with Porrons can complete this act without spilling wine.
Although it is practical for use in large groups, the chaotic reputation of Porron led her to the fall of into abuse. Most modern Spanish restaurants prefer the use of common glasses and drinks. Some tourists can discover several small taverns and pubs that still use PORRONS, especially to entertain foreigners.
one can also be able to find these unusual vessels inShops and antique stores. They usually create beautiful displays and can be used as an unusual vase or watering. Some people can even use them to display wine, even if pouring from Porron into a wine glass can be more practical than a traditional method.
