What is an elven owl?
Elf Owl, or Micrathene Whitney is the smallest kind of owl in the world. They take their Latin name by Josiah Dwight Whitney, a 19th century geologist in the United States. Other names for ELF OWL include the dwarf Owl, Whitney's Owl, Whitney's Elf Owl and Texas Elf Owl. In Mexico is called enano .
The typical adult owl is about 5 inches (13 cm) measuring. Weighing about 1 to 1.5 ounces (30 to 40 grams), it is roughly the size of the sparrow. Typical is a span of about 9 inches (23 cm).
Elven owls are grayly brown, devastating with brown and white spots. Unlike many other OWL species, the round head of the ELF OWL has no ear tufts. But it has a distinctive white eyebrow above the yellow eyes and a small gray beak.
coming from the desert of the southwestern US and Mexico, Elf Owls often create their homes near stream beds or other water sources. They nest in abandoned holes about gift sycamores and Oaks, but are best known for nesting in the giant Saguaro Cacti. OWLS initial from the northern regions migrates to Mexico for winter.
males choose nesting places and then try to attract a woman. Occasionally there is a competition on the nest, both with other owls and the woodpeckers who made nests. In April or May, the female ELF OWL lays one to five eggs that hatch in about three weeks. During the month, these Hatchlings are able to fly and hunt food themselves.
There is no power of larger owls, Elven owls usually hunt membership, such as spiders and insects. Grasshole, moths, scorpions, grasshoppers, centipedes and beetles are common prey. Elf Owls rarely attacks larger animals such as mice, birds or lizards.
Like all owls, the elves are nights and hunt at night. Keen night vision and acute auditory help to make the eLF owls effective. They are able to fly quietly and have excellent maneuverability in the air. Although they are able to forage on the ground orOn the tree, they prefer to catch prey during the flight.
When they face larger predators, the ELF OWL usually tries to flee. I can avoid most terrestrial predators such as snakes, coyotes and bobcats. When an ELF owl is captured, he will often "play dead" until the attacker loses his interest.
