Landfill gas composition

Depending on the source and composition of the landfill waste, the landfill gas contains 30% to 55% by volume of methane and 30% to 45% by volume of carbon dioxide. In addition, it contains a small amount of air, malodorous gases and other traces gas.
Methane in landfill gas is a flammable and explosive gas. Because methane needs to be mixed with air when it explodes, only 5% to 15% of the air will explode, so there is almost no danger of explosion in a closed landfill. However, when landfill gas is transferred out of the landfill through voids in the soil and mixed with air, an explosion may occur. Landfill gas also contains traces of ammonia, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, and many volatile organic compounds, which can cause malodor problems and air pollution. The two main components of landfill gas (methane and carbon dioxide) are greenhouse gases. However, according to the relevant provisions of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), carbon dioxide in untreated landfill gas is the result of biomass decomposition, which is part of the natural carbon cycle and is not included in greenhouse gases. Methane in landfill gas is included in the atmospheric greenhouse gas inventory, and its greenhouse effect is 21 times that of the same volume of carbon dioxide.

Landfill gas recycling methods

Each cubic meter of landfill gas is equivalent to the calorific value of about 0.5m 3 of natural gas or 0.5 L of fuel oil, that is, the calorific value of untreated landfill gas is 27.8-30.5 MJ / kg, which has a high fuel recovery value. Landfill gas is usually burned directly to generate electricity. It can also be used as pipeline natural gas or automobile fuel after purification. [1]

Landfill gas torch

A torch is generally set up in a landfill. Its role is to burn unused landfill gas, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, control the release of malodorous substances in the landfill gas, and reduce the impact of the landfill gas on the surrounding environment.
