When did the grass evolve?

You may think that grass is one of the simplest plants and develops at about the same time as the oldest vascular (water transmission tissue) plants, about 410 million years ago. However, the grass - the Poaceae family in flowering plants - have evolved much recently, during the late Cretaceous, only 65 million years ago, just before the extinction that was erased by dinosaurs. Until recently, it was assumed that the grass dated up to 55 million years until the fossils of grass were discovered in fossilized dinosaur feces known as Coprolits. Some of these fossils were ancient ancestors of today's rice and bamboo. Phytolites (which means "plant stone") are small silicon balls found in many plants, but especially grass. Phytolites add structural integrity to the plant and also make it on cereal grain and therefore less tasty animals.
