What is an audiometer?

Audiometer is a special tool that is used to measure hearing field. The invention of this device is credited by Dr. Harvey Fletcher of Brigham Young University. Audiologists and specialists in the ears, nose and neck (ENTS) use audiometers to perform hearing tests. The audiometer used in professional clinical settings has a set set for calibration and can be used to identify and monitor hearing and hearing failures.

A physician or specialist uses an audiometer to perform a number of tests and then assembles individual results to assess the hearing of the individual. The audiometer is specially calibrated to provide optimal test results. The test results are measured and recorded on a graph called Audiogram.

The audiometer represents tones on various frequencies or playgrounds and at different intensities or levels of volume. The same frequency is presented at different intensities until the patient no longer responds to the sound. THTEST E continues with different frequencies presentoin the same way until a consistent assessment of hearing can be made. The patient is usually provided a few headphones through which sounds travel and the patient is instructed to react when they hear the sound.

The audiometer is most often a separate piece of hardware or machine itself. However, there are also digital audiometers that act as computer software. Many times, speech therapists working in education will use Audiometer software to help monitor their students' progress. Although in various settings, such as education, the audiometer software is a useful tool, most clinical settings prefer the use of audiometer machines because they are specially calibrated and provide the most accurate measurements.

Most school children in the United States are tested an audiometer of the school years between kindergarten and the first class. If the probes areSuspect is usually marked on their family physicians or audiologists or ont for further evaluation.
